W Gibson and Co is well respected for their quality pieces of Bog Jewellery that they made during the Victorian Period
During part of the Victorian period from about 1860 to 1890, this jewelry was the height of fashion and black was a stylish color, not just an ornament of mourning. Made of jet, vulcanite, bog oak or pressed horn, each carried special meaning as a memento of a loved one. A brooch in the shape of a handcarrying a bouquet conveyed a message symbolized by the flowers. While some black jewelry was meant to be worn during mourning, black jewelry was fashionable as well, and worn for its beauty and sentiment.
When Prince Albert died 1861 Queen Victoria set in motion a trend that would live on for decades. Queen Victoria went into mourning and until her death in 1901 the Queen only wore black jewellery and dressed only in black. Many people collect mourning jewellery or rememberance jewellery. This is a rare set and in beautiful condition.
